Year 10

Nathan WoodNovember 27, 2017September 10, 2020

As your son enters Year 10, he will be asked to choose from a list of elective subjects to provide breadth of study. All boys will undertake a course in English, Mathematics, Humanities and Social Sciences, Science, Health and Physical Education and Language Acquisition. He will then choose two courses, one from the Arts and one from the Design and Technology curriculum areas. In addition, a Philosophy course is available to be selected in place of either an Arts or Design and Technology course. It is a semester long course and although offered in both semesters, it can only be taken once.

In choosing these courses, your son should carefully consider his potential subject choices for Year 11, as each Year 10 course helps prepare boys for specific Year 11 ATAR, General and IB Diploma courses.

Compulsory courses

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Science
  • Health and Physical Education
  • Language Acquisition

Language Acquisition

In Year 10 there will be two streams of study: Language Acquisition and Language and Culture. Language Acquisition leads to study of French, Spanish or Indonesian in Year 11, whereas Language and Culture leads to a wider appreciation of the subject studied in Year 9.

Wellbeing

The Pastoral Care programme is designed to help improve resilience and problem solving abilities within the students.  We encourage peer learning and building peer support networks that are reinforced in the House Structure. The programme will assist the students in developing the life skills to effectively cope with difficult or anxiety provoking situations.

Elective Courses

A boy must choose two courses, one Arts and one Design and Technology  course from the list below. The Broadening course, Philosophy, can be taken in place of an Arts or Design and Technology course in one semester.

The only exception is the Music Extension Course, which will run for one academic year.

Example:

A student could choose Food Design and Visual Art

A student could choose Drama and STEM

A student could choose Media and Philosophy

A student could choose Wood and Philosophy

A student could choose Music Extension (year-long course)
