Language Acquisition Indonesian
The Year 7 Indonesian programme welcomes beginners into Phase 1.
Year 7 is the student’s introduction to the Indonesian language, an important language offered at Scotch considering Indonesia’s geographical closeness to Australia and the growing relationship between the two countries.
In Year 7, students are reintroduced to the basics of social connections and communication, rooted in an exploration of their own identity and their own lives. In learning to speak about themselves and their closest social circles using a different way, in this case in Indonesian, they reflect on what makes them who they are. In the second half of the year, students expanded their exploration of identity and social connections a familiar and comfortable social sphere, their school. They also learn to communicate with people and in settings that might be more unfamiliar, using ordering food at restaurants and other dining establishments as a context. In this way, this year serves as a preparation for students to engage with the wonderful and sometimes very foreign world of Indonesian language and cultures.
At this end of this one-year journey, students should have more understanding of themselves and in understanding cultural and linguistic differences, in addition to being more confident in learning and expressing themselves using Indonesian. This includes cultural knowledge such as differences when addressing older people and different terms of address that are culturally defined.
