Maths Enrichment
Welcome to Senior School Mathematics Enrichment program!
Identified students participate in challenging problem solving activities with like-minded students. Maths Olympiad aims to foster mathematical creativity, develop flexibility in problem solving, strengthen mathematical intuition and provide for the satisfaction, joy and thrill of mastering challenging problems.
How many aliens are there in the universe? When is the best time to throw a sponge at your classmate? What does chaos look like? Who was responsible for coming up with π, and why do mathematicians keep estimating more digits of π? How can maths help you increase your chances of winning a car, and reduce your chances of winning a goat? (Or increase your chances of winning a goat, if that is your desire!)
The Senior School maths enrichment program aims to answer these questions and more. Students who enter the program have the opportunity to learn mathematics that is either accelerated or outside of the classroom. Across the year, student’s attend classes where we solve problems, learn new mathematical concepts and provide opportunities to trade ideas and lead discussions. In April to October, we will be going through the Australian Mathematics Trust Enrichment Program. Where students will go from Newton, Dirichlet,Euler, Gauss and, for the very mathematically able, Noether and Polya enrichment programs.
Students have multiple opportunities to flex their mathematical knowledge across the year, in competitions like the Have Sum Fun competition, the APSMO Olympiad, WAJO and the Australian Mathematics Competition.
Soon, we will be entering an group-based project based on open-ended mathematics. This will encompass multiple year groups across some stimulating questions, leading to an opportunity to present each group’s ideas.
Overall, look forward to welcoming you to our program.
Kind Regards,
Mr Oscar Burke
