Acceleration occurs when students move through the traditional curriculum at rates faster than typical to match the level and complexity of the curriculum with the readiness and motivation of the student.
In accordance with our belief that all students at Scotch are entitled to an education commensurate with their particular needs, students who can exceed the grade-level indicators must be afforded the opportunity to be accelerated.
Scotch College believes that such students may require access to advanced curriculum in order to realise their potential contribution to themselves and society. As such, we currently make provision for the following types of acceleration:
Whole-Grade Acceleration: This is the practice of assigning a student to a higher grade level than is typical, given the student’s age on a full-time basis, for the purpose of providing access to appropriately challenging learning opportunities. Given the importance we place on our students social and emotional development and the significant implications for whole grade acceleration, we offer this opportunity under rare circumstances.
Individual Subject Acceleration: This is the practice of assigning a student to a higher year level than is typical, given the student’s age, for the purpose of providing access to appropriately challenging learning opportunities in one or more subject areas.
