VISION FOR WELLBEING
We want to see everyone functioning at their best as often as possible.
GUIDING PRINCIPLES
- Develop a shared language around Wellbeing
- Ensure that staff receive education and training – they must see the worth of wellbeing in their own lives and live it before they can be authentic in their delivery to the boys
- Teach and explore Wellbeing-related skills in stand-alone courses, but also embed these in other classes, so that those skills can be used in a variety of contexts (at school, outside school and after graduation)
- Promote mental health and prevent mental illness
- Ensure communal health, not just individual wellbeing
DEFINITION OF WELLBEING
Wellbeing at Scotch encompasses everything we do to build each individual’s capacity to live life well. In the words of Frederick Douglass, “It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.” We define Wellbeing as possessing the physical, social, emotional and spiritual resources to ride life’s waves; to recognise and make the most of every opportunity; and to be the best version of yourself whatever the circumstances.
FRAMEWORK
At the heart of Wellbeing at Scotch is the concept of “Knowing the Boy”. At every stage of a boy’s development, there are significant staff who seek to understand what is going on in his life and what skills he needs to live life well. We aim to build a sense of belonging and a feeling of being safe, connected and valued. Built into “Knowing the Boy”, we can incorporate the Self-Management ATLs from the International Baccalaureate. We believe that everyone requires the following three pillars to be at their best as often as possible:
Resilience
- Riding life’s waves; Overcoming obstacles
- Grit/perseverance + passion
- Self-motivation
- Mindfulness
Respect
- Self-respect
- Respect for Others (including women)
- Respect for the Past/Tradition
- Respect for the Environment
- Awe
Relationships
- Compassion; empathy
- Kindness
- Gratitude
- Emotional Recognition, Expression and Management
