Middle School
Service as Action
All students in the Middle School engage in ‘service as action’ as part of the MYP. This can take a number of forms: direct engagement with a service organisation, indirect service such as advocacy or raising awareness, research and self-reflection. A major component of ‘service as action’ is the Community Project which is a student-directed collaborative inquiry held over an extended period during Year 8. Students have the opportunity to identify and address needs within the community and, in response to their learning and experience, come to understand the difference they can make through their own actions.
Uniting WA Winter and Christmas Appeals
As a school of the Uniting Church in Australia, Scotch College actively supports Uniting WA and other service organisations associated with the WA synod. It is also committed to social justice and reconciliation. As part of this commitment, students in the Middle School support two annual appeals to assist people in need in the Perth area.
- the Winter Appeal, which usually involves donating warm clothes, toiletries and phone chargers to Tranby Engagement Hub
- the Christmas Appeal, filling hampers with non-perishable foods, drinks and treats for disadvantaged families
Community and Service Club
Middle School students have the opportunity to take a leadership role in fundraising activities and community events by joining the Community and Service Club. This lunchtime club runs the Greenbatch recycling program and organises free dress days and competitions to raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation, Red Cross, Surf Life Saving and other charities.
