House Service Activities
On top of school based service activities, each house engages in individualised service activities, organised and run by their respective house service leaders. Part of my role as the Vice-Captain (Service) is to oversee the planning and running of these house-based service events. The Service Council is comprised of the ten house service leaders, Reverend. Gary van Heerden and the Service Captain. We meet once a week and in these meetings we discuss ideas regarding how to smoothly run service activities that not only benefit a cause but also engage the student body with the charity. The house service representatives are encouraged to run at least one house event per year, on top of their pre-existing school service commitments.
Many houses already have partnerships with charities from previous years; these partnerships are valuable as they build on a long lasting relationship and for the effect of service events to be cumulative rather than one-off. It is also great to see House student representatives pursue a service activity of their choice as this gives them a sense of ownership over their role. This year, a lot of house service representatives have wanted to expand their house activity into a whole school event; this expansion is great because it has a greater impact on the cause of the event and also integrates house and school service activities.
