Instrument Hire and Maintenance
Scotch College encourages the learning of music through its instrument hire facility.
A range of standard orchestral and band instruments are available for hire. The aim of the hire facility is to promote the early-learning stages of a student’s musical life and facilitate curiosity in learning a musical instrument.
Annual fees for hiring instruments are listed below. These fees contribute to the ongoing maintenance and cleaning fees of the instruments, to ensure future students can benefit from this valuable facility.
Instrument hire is subject to terms and conditions. To read the full terms and conditions of instrument hire, please click here.
During the hire period, the student is responsible for the daily care and upkeep of the instrument. Students are instructed in their first music lesson on basic care and cleaning practices specific to their instrument. If the student is unsure how to correctly care for their hire instrument at any stage, please contact the Music Tutor or the Administration Officer – Music Resources at musicresources@scotch.wa.edu.au phone 9383 6969.
Any loss or damage during the hire period must be reported immediately by emailing musicresources@scotch.wa.edu.au or phoning 9383 6969.
For insurance purposes, all repairs must be booked and managed through the music department. The cost of any repairs or recovery due to loss or damage incurred during the hire period will be charged to the student account.
During the hire period, most instruments will require additional accessories or consumables such as reeds, valve oil, cork grease or rosin. Purchase of these items is the responsibility of the parent or guardian. Instrumental teachers will advise what particular accessories are required. These can be purchased directly from a music retail store.
The instrument hire facility is designed to support the early stages of learning an instrument. Parents are encouraged to consider investing in the purchase of a private instrument as soon as practicable, or when the student is showing enthusiasm to continue lessons beyond one year. Advice about the purchase of musical instruments is available from the Music Department.
Hiring an Instrument
Request for instrument hire is done during the enrolment for music tuition. Instruments are then issued to the student at the first music lesson. To enquire about hiring an instrument outside of this time, please email musicresources@scotch.wa.edu.au or phone 9383 6969.
Returning Hire Instruments
Returning a hire instrument must be done during school hours, to the Senior School Music Department reception, or by appointment to the Music Resource Co-Ordinator’s office. To arrange an appointment email musicresources@scotch.wa.edu.au or phone 9383 6969. Failure to return a hire instrument will result in ongoing hire fees being charged.
Students participating in the Year 6 and 7 Band Program will be contacted separately about how to return hired instruments.
