Firefighting procedures
Occupants who have been trained to use an extinguisher or other equipment competently may attempt to extinguish the fire only if safe to do so.
Initial response: R A C E
- Remove – Any persons in immediate danger to a safe area, evacuate if necessary.
- Alarm or Alert- Raise the alarm to emergency services, switchboard and Chief Warden.
- Contain – Close but do not lock doors and windows if safe to do so
- Extinguish or Evacuate – Try to extinguish the fire using appropriate firefighting equipment only if you are trained and it is safe to do so or evacuate.
Using an extinguisher
Remember “P A S S”
- Pull the pin and test the equipment.
- Aim the director or nozzle at the base of the fire.
- Squeeze the operating handle.
- Sweep the extinguishing agent from side to side.
After the fire
If the fire is extinguished prior to the arrival of the Emergency Services:
- Do not disturb the incident area.
- Keep away from the smoke and other affected areas.
- Ensure the Chief Warden is notified of the equipment used for replacement.
- Complete any reporting procedures.
