Evacuation procedures
On activation of the fire alarm in any area
- Don white Chief Warden identification and collect necessary keys, mobile phone and Evacuation Checklist.
- Ensure that the Emergency Services have been notified of the emergency by dialling 000. Advise Emergency Services of the area in alarm within the school and the entrance they should use.
- Immobilise lifts in the area in alarm if applicable.
- Proceed to the Master Emergency Control Point (Reception of the building in alarm). Ensure Area Wardens are initiating evacuation procedures in the area in alarm.
- Remain near the Master Emergency Control Point or at a safe distance from the front of the building (if the area becomes untenable) to receive evacuation reports from Area Wardens and await the arrival of Emergency Services.
- If deemed necessary, initiate a full school evacuation by activating the Evacuation alarm.
- Despatch nominated Wardens to the site entrances to restrict vehicular entry to the facility and meet responding Emergency Services vehicles.
- Ensure neighbouring facilities are notified of the emergency on site.
- Appoint a person to collect the visitors/contractors sign in book and account for these persons at the assembly area.
- Wait for Area Wardens to advise when their area is clear. Ask:
- Is anyone remaining or refusing to leave the area?
- Are there any occupants or visitors with disabilities, have their PEEPs been activated and where are they located?
- Are there any areas not searched?
- As the Area Wardens report, note down on the Evacuation Checklist the area as being cleared, how many people remain (if any), the number and location of occupants and visitors with disabilities and areas not searched (if any).
- On arrival of the Emergency Services provide the Officer in Charge with the Evacuation Checklist detailing:
- the nature and location of the emergency
- areas reported as All Clear
- areas that are evacuating
- the location of any remaining occupants and occupants/visitors with disabilities
- areas that have not been searched/cleared.
- Follow the instructions of the Officer in Charge.
Post evacuation procedures
- The Officer in Charge will advise that either:
- The building is safe to re-enter,
- Some areas may not be entered, or
- The entire building may not be re-entered.
- Proceed to the assembly area and advise staff of the situation.
- Initiate the “All Clear” alarm.
- Complete an Evacuation Incident Report.
- Ensure that any required external reporting is made. An incident that requires the evacuation of staff and students is a Reportable Incident (per Standard 7 of the Registration Standards for Non-Government Schools) and must be reported as such to the Director General of the Department of Education (via Non-Government School Registration).
