Mathematics
The Year 6 course includes challenges in number sense showing the theory and logic behind the use of basic skills that involve pattern and data recognition. The students are exposed to questions that aim to target problem-solving; an integral part of each lesson that presents opportunities for the students to work cooperatively to become more critical in their thinking. Furthermore, elements of geometry are incorporated to develop the students thirst for inquiry-based learning and in so doing expand their spatial awareness to applying mathematics to authentic real-life situations. At the end of the course, students have been encouraged to:
- recognise that mathematics permeates the world around us
- appreciate the usefulness, power and beauty of mathematics
- enjoy mathematics and develop patience and persistence when solving problems
- understand and be able to use the language, symbols and notation of mathematics
- develop mathematical curiosity and use inductive and deductive reasoning when solving problems
